About Us

1922

The British Broadcasting Company was founded by a group of radio companies along with John Reith who later became the first BBC Director General, marking the beginning of the UK’s national broadcasting service and it became the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1927.

1936

The BBC launched the world’s first regular “high-definition” television service from Alexandra Palace in London.

1948

Television Centre in White City, London, was commissioned to address the growing needs of television production.

1960

BBC Television Centre officially opened, becoming the hub for television production and broadcasting. Designed by Graham Dawbarn with a very distinctive circular design affectionately known as the ‘doughnut’ – the outer edges had the television studios with easy external access.

1984

The BBC purchased studios in Borehamwood which already had a rich history and named it BBC Elstree Centre. EastEnders has been filmed here since it started on 19th February 1985. Many productions have been made onsite since at Elstree including Top of the Pops – Holby – Children in Need – Comic Relief – Going for Gold – Kilroy – Pointless – The Chase – It Takes Two – Limitless Win – A League of their Own.

1990s

The BBC began modernizing its facilities, incorporating digital technologies to enhance production capabilities. BBC online started in 1997.

2013

BBC Studioworks began offering services at Elstree Film Studios, providing additional high-quality facilities for film and television production – creating new production galleries for existing studios on the site.
Strictly Come Dancing, The Chase, Pointless and many other titles are made here.

2016

BBC Studios and Post Production was rebranded and became BBC Studioworks, focusing on providing television studios, post production, crew and related services to the market.

2017

BBC Studioworks re-opened three studios at television centre alongside post production facilities and ancillary areas used in production. The iconic building is back making television again!

2017

BBC Studioworks continued its operations at BBC Elstree Centre, supporting a range of television productions, including popular shows like EastEnders.

2021

BBC Studioworks expand its operations to Kelvin Hall in Glasgow, offering modern state-of-the-art production facilities in Scotland utilising the latest technology.

2023

BBC Studioworks continued to innovate and enhance its commitment to sustainability and ranked highest for the albert BAFTA Studio Sustainability Standard, solidifying its position as a leader in the industry.

2023

BBC Studioworks launches the BBC Studioworks equipment business.

2023

BBC Studioworks takes on studio facilities at Roath Lock, Cardiff.

2024

Looking to the future, BBC Studioworks is set to embrace new technologies and sustainable practices, continuing its legacy of excellence while fostering innovation and supporting the next generation of creative talent.
